FAW Bestune's $1.2 Billion Capital Raise Is About More Than Cash

FAW Bestune has completed a major capital increase at a time when China's new-energy vehicle market is becoming more competitive and investors are more selective.

A major injection for an EV transition

On September 6, the Beijing Equity Exchange disclosed that FAW Bestune Automobile had raised about $1.2 billion. The four new strategic investors are Jiangsu Yueda Automobile Group, ABC Financial Asset Investment under Agricultural Bank of China, China Telecom and Nanjing Horizon Information Technology.

Controlling shareholder China FAW also increased its investment at the same time, signalling continued support for the group's independent-brand new-energy transition.

The proceeds will mainly be used for new-energy technology R&D, intelligent manufacturing upgrades and channel-ecosystem construction.

Four investors, four kinds of support

The shareholder structure is strategically designed. It brings together local state capital, central financial capital, telecommunications resources and smart-driving technology.

Jiangsu Yueda invested about $238 million. As a local state-owned automotive group based in Yancheng, it gives Bestune stronger access to the Yangtze River Delta's new-energy supply chain and manufacturing ecosystem.

ABC Financial Asset Investment contributed about $139 million. With Agricultural Bank of China's broad financial network and customer base, it can support vehicle loans, insurance and other automotive-finance services for Bestune.

China Telecom invested about $69 million. Its strengths in 5G, cloud computing and data can support smart-cabin and connected-vehicle development.

Horizon invested about $14 million. Its intelligent-driving chip and algorithm capability gives Bestune direct access to one of the most important technology layers in the new-energy market.

China FAW invested about $728 million. After the transaction, China FAW directly and indirectly holds 79.0394 per cent of Bestune, preserving strategic control while bringing in more market-oriented shareholders. Yueda, ABC Financial, China Telecom and Horizon hold 10.3358 per cent, 6.0443 per cent, 3.0222 per cent and 0.6044 per cent respectively.

Why the capital matters

Yueda's role is especially important because it has already worked with Bestune. In 2023, it became Bestune's first external shareholder with an investment of about $23 million. The new investment deepens cooperation and may help Bestune lower production costs through Yancheng's industrial base.

ABC's participation opens an "auto plus finance" path. It can help create dedicated new-energy vehicle credit products and insurance services, and possibly support new business models tied to rural or broader retail finance.

China Telecom can help Bestune improve smart-vehicle connectivity, cloud systems and cabin experience. Horizon can support assisted-driving development from chips to algorithms and vehicle integration.

That makes the financing more than a balance-sheet repair. It gives Bestune an ecosystem of industrial, financial and technology partners.

Reform has started to show results

Bestune's transition did not begin with this funding. In March 2024, under FAW Group's strategy, Bestune completed a shareholding reform and changed from FAW Bestune Car to FAW Bestune Automobile.

The reform improved the equity structure and introduced more market-oriented decision-making and incentive mechanisms. People familiar with the company cited in the article said the decision chain shortened by about 30 per cent after mixed-ownership reform, product-development cycles were compressed, and compensation systems introduced profit-sharing and equity incentives.

Bestune has since pushed an "all-in new energy" strategy. Over the past three years, it has invested more than about $1.4 billion to build the Bestune Yueyi new-energy sequence, aimed at mainstream buyers seeking quality and value.

The company has built three technical clusters: Yueying platform, Zhuri powertrain and Ruyi cabin. The platform covers architecture, comfort, energy efficiency, chassis and safety. The powertrain cluster includes pure EV, hybrid and range-extended routes. The cabin system focuses on smooth interaction, entertainment, rhythm and intelligence.

Manufacturing and sales momentum

Bestune has built a dual-base intelligent manufacturing system in Changchun and Yancheng, with combined annual capacity above 400,000 vehicles. Yancheng is the main new-energy production base and had created a local supplier cluster of 135 companies by June.

The market response has improved. In 2024, Bestune sold 151,000 vehicles, its highest level in nearly a decade. New-energy sales reached 83,000, up 214 per cent, lifting new-energy penetration to 55 per cent.

Growth continued in 2025. From January to August, cumulative sales reached 118,000, up 47.5 per cent. New-energy models sold 101,000, up 233.9 per cent, with penetration above 85 per cent. In August, sales reached 15,900, and new-energy vehicles accounted for 91 per cent.

What comes next

Bestune plans to launch six new models over the next two years, building E, P and R product matrices that cover A0 to B-class markets and include pure EV, plug-in hybrid and range-extended vehicles.

The E series focuses on pure EVs. The Yueyi 03 is an A0-class compact electric SUV with a 2,750mm wheelbase. The P series targets plug-in hybrids, with Yueyi 07 already launched and further expansion planned into higher market segments. The R series targets range-extended vehicles, with the Yueyi 08 flagship sedan shown at the 2025 Shanghai auto show and expected to launch in early 2026.

The size of the new funding shows that investors see more than short-term rescue value. They are betting that Bestune's reform, new-energy sales growth and partner ecosystem can create a more competitive independent FAW brand.
