Audi's China EV Reboot Starts Cheaper Than Huawei-Backed Stelato's Electric Wagon

Audi E5 Sportback entered China with a starting price of about $33,000, while the battery-electric Stelato S9T started at about $46,000.

A surprising price reversal

That reversal, with a global luxury brand below a Chinese technology-backed challenger, captures how quickly China's premium EV market has changed.

For Audi, the E5 Sportback is the first model from its new AUDI brand and a serious attempt to reset its electric strategy in China. For Stelato, the S9T extends Harmony Intelligent Mobility's product scenarios and supports BAIC's electrification transformation.

The two models meet in a relatively narrow wagon market. That makes the comparison sharper: Audi wants to break through in Chinese electrification, while Stelato wants to prove a new Huawei-backed luxury product can command a higher price.

Why Audi chose a wagon

Audi has deep wagon history. It built its first estate car in 1966 and introduced the Avant name in 1977 with the second-generation Audi 100 Avant. Its wagon family spans Avant and Allroad models across A, S and RS performance levels.

That heritage gives Audi a natural way to enter China's electric market from a more distinctive angle. The E5 Sportback is not a generic electric SUV. It uses a form factor that connects Audi's past with a new China-focused EV strategy.

Stelato also has a logic for entering the segment. It has little wagon heritage, but the format gives BAIC and Huawei a way to test a new lifestyle category under Harmony Intelligent Mobility.

The E5 Sportback carries more strategic weight for Audi. It launches the AUDI dual-brand strategy in the electric era and uses an intelligent digital platform that combines Audi chassis experience with China's local digital ecosystem.

Product strength and price positioning

Audi has priced the E5 Sportback aggressively. With benefits such as about $1,000 in insurance support, the practical entry level moves toward the roughly $31,000 range.

The technical package is also strong. The vehicle uses an 800V high-voltage architecture that can add 370km of range in 10 minutes, and a CATL 100kWh ternary lithium battery gives a maximum CLTC range of 773km.

Performance is another Audi advantage. The dual-motor all-wheel-drive system delivers 787 horsepower and 800Nm of torque, with 0-100km/h acceleration in 3.4 seconds. The article compares that output to the much more expensive Audi RS6 Avant GT, which sits around the roughly $264,000 level.

The pure-electric quattro system can distribute power in 10 milliseconds and is designed to maintain stability in difficult highway conditions such as one-side standing water.

Stelato S9T's pure-electric Max version uses a single motor with 309 horsepower and a 0-100km/h time of 5.92 seconds. That puts it closer to the entry level of Audi's performance envelope rather than ahead of it.

Audi fixes old weaknesses

Audi has also tried to address the intelligent-technology weaknesses that hurt German luxury brands in China. The E5 Sportback uses AUDI OS, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8295 chip and ByteDance's Doubao large model. It supports recognition of 21 dialects, including Sichuanese and Cantonese.

The navigation system includes internal-road data for two million residential compounds, allowing more precise guidance inside communities. That level of localisation is designed to change perceptions that foreign luxury brands do not understand Chinese digital use cases.

The assisted-driving system, developed with Momenta, is tuned for China's complex roads, including two-wheeler recognition and night-driving capability. It covers urban, highway and parking scenarios.

Audi's traditional luxury strengths remain visible. The E5 Sportback has a 59-inch wide display, 3D vehicle interaction, BOSE audio, five exclusive fragrance options and diamond-pattern seat quilting.

Stelato's technology case

Stelato S9T is not without strengths. It includes a zero-gravity passenger seat, a heating and cooling box, Huawei ADS 4 and 36 sensors. Those features reinforce the idea that Harmony Intelligent Mobility can bring advanced technology into premium vehicles quickly.

The difficulty is that its technology lead may not be large enough to offset Audi's brand, performance, refinement and price advantage. Stelato is still a new brand, and Huawei technology is now shared across several partner brands, making it harder for S9T to stand apart solely through the Huawei label.

Quality perception also matters. Audi says the E5 Sportback follows global quality and safety standards, with 83.6 per cent high-strength steel in the body, extreme climate testing across two winters and two summers, and 16 high-voltage safety tests above national standards. Key performance validation was completed at Audi's German headquarters laboratories.

Stelato has Huawei's supply-chain management support, but long-term reliability for a new brand and first model still needs market proof.

Service and residual value

The competition is not only about the product. SAIC Audi remains one of the few luxury brands still expanding stores in China. It expects to exceed 240 outlets by year-end, covering more than 100 cities. It also offers pickup and delivery, 24-hour roadside assistance and aftersales standards shared with the four-ring Audi brand.

Stelato relies on the Harmony Intelligent Mobility retail network, which covers more than 50 cities. That is respectable for a new brand, but its repair network is still less than one-tenth the size of Audi's, according to the article.

Residual value may also favour Audi. Traditional luxury brands still generally perform better in China's used-car market than new-force brands. E5 Sportback, as the first model in Audi's new dual-brand strategy, is likely to benefit from that legacy. Stelato S9T starts from a blank sheet.

Audi's best China EV chance yet

The E5 Sportback is Audi's strongest China EV statement so far. It combines a distinctive wagon identity, sharp pricing, strong performance, more credible localisation and a service base that a new brand cannot easily copy.

Stelato S9T still has Huawei technology and a premium positioning, but its higher starting price and younger brand identity make the comparison difficult.

The final answer will come from orders. If Audi E5 Sportback succeeds, it could change Audi's place in the German luxury EV race in China and give the company a clearer route back into relevance.
