What Is the Taklimakan Rally?
The Taklimakan Rally is China’s premier cross-country rally raid event and one of the toughest off-road races in Asia. Often referred to as the “Asian Dakar,” the rally takes place across the vast deserts, canyons, Gobi landscapes and remote wilderness of Xinjiang in northwestern China.
First launched in 2005, the event has grown into China’s most prestigious rally raid competition, attracting factory-backed teams, professional drivers and motorcycle riders from around the world. The race serves as both a major motorsport event and a proving ground for new vehicle technologies under extreme conditions.
2026 Rally Route and Stages
The 2026 Taklimakan Rally began in Urumqi on May 16 and is scheduled to finish in Aksu after crossing large parts of Xinjiang. Organizers designed the longest route in the event’s history, covering approximately 7,500–8,000 kilometers over 17 days. Competitive special stages account for between 3,400 and 4,200 kilometers of the total distance. Around 60% of the route runs through desert terrain, including sections of the Taklimakan Desert itself.
The rally features 15 special stages, multiple bivouac camps and, for the first time, an ultra-long marathon stage. Competitors face a variety of terrain, including sand dunes, dry riverbeds, rocky mountain tracks, Gobi desert and Yardang landforms.
Competition Rules
The Taklimakan Rally follows the rally raid format used in major international cross-country events. Competitors race against the clock on timed special stages while relying on navigation systems to find the correct route. The winner is determined by the lowest cumulative elapsed time across all stages.
The event includes separate categories for cars, motorcycles and trucks. Recent editions have also introduced new-energy vehicle classes, allowing hybrid and electrified vehicles to compete alongside conventional internal-combustion models. Teams must balance speed, navigation accuracy, vehicle reliability and endurance throughout the event.
Why the Rally Matters
Beyond motorsport, the Taklimakan Rally has become an important testing platform for Chinese automakers. Manufacturers use the event to evaluate vehicle durability, suspension systems, powertrains and off-road technologies under some of the harshest conditions on earth. Temperatures can exceed 40°C, while sandstorms and deep dunes create challenges comparable to those found in the Dakar Rally.
The rally also promotes tourism and economic development across Xinjiang by showcasing the region’s unique landscapes and cultural heritage.
2026 Participation and Results
The 2026 event attracted a record field of 299 competitors and 152 vehicles from 74 teams, including participants from eight countries. The route stretches from Urumqi through Turpan, Bayingolin, Hotan and Kashgar before finishing in Aksu. Russian truck racing powerhouse Kamaz Master made its debut appearance in the event.
As the rally is still ongoing, final overall winners have not yet been determined. Early stages have already produced intense competition, with drivers completing several demanding desert stages, including a 468-kilometer special stage regarded as one of the toughest sections of the race.
